San Jose Sharks News & Updates

Akim Aliu, well known for his advocacy for inclusivity in hockey, has recently been given a tryout opportunity with the San Jose Barracuda, which operates under the San Jose Sharks as their AHL affiliate.

Aliu, who plays defense, acknowledged the tryout offer and expressed his appreciation for this chance. His professional journey has predominantly been in minor leagues where he has played for several teams over the years.

Aliu came into the spotlight for his bold stance against racism within the sport. He brought to light the abusive behavior and racial slurs he endured from Bill Peters, a former coach for the Calgary Flames. Following Aliu's revelations, Peters resigned, and it prompted the NHL to introduce a conduct policy aimed at tackling racism.

According to Aliu, incidents of hazing and his outspoken nature against injustices might have led to perceptions of him being a problematic individual, potentially impacting his career trajectory. While he hasn't officially retired, Aliu has devoted efforts towards the Hockey Diversity Alliance, striving for greater diversity and inclusion in hockey.

Aliu, whose upbringing was marked by financial hardships, has narrated his experiences in a graphic novel entitled "Akim Aliu Dreamer: Growing Up Black in the World of Hockey."
