Alex Ovechkin netted a pair of goals in just two minutes, aiding the Washington Capitals in their 5-3 victory over the New York Rangers.
These goals raised Ovechkin’s career total to 855 and 856, putting him 38 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky's NHL record. The match also included a brawl between Matt Rempe and Dylan McIlrath.
The Capitals secured additional goals from Connor McMichael, Aliaksei Protas, and Nic Dowd. Logan Thompson managed 16 saves, while Igor Shesterkin stopped 41 out of 45 shots for the Rangers.
Although Shesterkin conceded four goals, he delivered an impressive performance that kept the Rangers competitive. New York got goals from Will Cuylle, Chris Kreider, and Filip Chytil.
Jakob Chychrun, a defenseman for the Capitals, exited the match early due to an upper-body injury.
For the Rangers, challenges persist with decreased playing time for center Mika Zibanejad. At age 39, Ovechkin continues to perform at a high level and is projected to match Gretzky's record by the season's conclusion.
A pivotal moment came when Ovechkin scored 5:10 into the first period, giving the Capitals an early lead they maintained throughout.
Even though Washington has gone 20 consecutive power plays without scoring, they have still managed to win five of their last six games without relying on it.
Looking ahead, the Rangers will play against Ottawa on Friday, while the Capitals will face Montreal on Thursday.
