In Las Vegas, Alex Ovechkin netted three goals, helping the Washington Capitals secure a 5-2 win over the Golden Knights. Logan Thompson, facing his former team, made 40 saves in his debut at T-Mobile Arena.
The Capitals also saw goals from Jakob Chychrun, Jakub Vrana, Dylan Strome, and Aliaksei Protas. For the Golden Knights, Brett Howden and Keegan Kolesar found the back of the net, while Ilya Samsonov managed 20 saves.
Ovechkin is now just 29 goals away from Wayne Gretzky’s career record. He has achieved 31 career hat tricks and scored in 176 multigoal games. Additionally, he extended his record to 315 power-play goals.
The Golden Knights paid tribute to Thompson, who played with them between 2021 to 2024, with a video during the first period. Coach Bruce Cassidy from Vegas is just one win away from reaching his 400th victory.
Previously unsuccessful in six regular-season visits to T-Mobile, the Capitals will wrap up their three-game road trip in Utah on Monday. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights are set to begin a five-game road journey in Toronto on Wednesday.
