In San Jose, the Anaheim Ducks claimed a 2-0 victory over the Sharks in their season opener with Isac Lundestrom's third-period goal breaking the tie.
Trevor Zegras ensured the win with an empty-net goal. Lukas Dostal was impressive in goal for the Ducks, making 30 saves for the shutout, while Vitek Vanecek managed 28 saves for the Sharks.
Despite applying pressure, the Sharks found it difficult to score against Dostal, who performed admirably in his first opening-night start of his career.
A power-play goal by Fabian Zetterlund was disallowed early in the opening period, keeping the match scoreless until Lundestrom's wrist shot found the net with nine minutes left in regulation time.
No team could score for the first 51 minutes of play. On Sunday, the Ducks will play against Vegas, whereas the Sharks will start a three-game road trip in Dallas on Tuesday.
