In a compelling match in San Jose, Lawson Crouse, Nick Schmaltz, and Clayton Keller played crucial roles for the Arizona Coyotes, each delivering a goal and an assist in a 5-2 triumph against the San Jose Sharks.
The decisive moments came in the third period when Dylan Guenther's goal, merely five minutes in, tipped the scales in favor of the Coyotes. Following this, Keller added to the lead and Schmaltz cemented the victory with a goal into an empty net, all after a play Guenther described as "weird and broken," assisted by Alex Kerfoot.
This win represents a positive beginning to the Coyotes' five-game journey on the road. Guenther highlighted the necessity of keeping up the momentum for the rest of the trip, in spite of the team's earlier elimination from playoff contention.
Conversely, the Sharks are navigating through a tough phase, having lost 12 of their last 14 matches. Their coach, David Quinn, pointed to difficulties in offense and the discouraging impact of Guenther's goal as key factors in their latest loss. Despite accumulating several penalty minutes, the Coyotes managed to neutralize five out of six power plays by the Sharks.
The game's initial period saw an exchange of goals, with contributions from Crouse and Liam O'Brien for Arizona, and Henry Thrun and Luke Kunin for San Jose. Additionally, Sharks defenseman Calen Addison was penalized with a 10-minute misconduct for contesting the referees' decisions, mirroring an incident from a previous game.
Following this victory, the Coyotes are set to face Seattle on Tuesday, while the next challenge for the Sharks will be hosting Calgary.
