In Phoenix, the Arizona Coyotes are exploring the opportunity to bid on a parcel of land in the northern part of the city for the potential construction of a new sports complex.
The appraisal for the 95-acre land by the Arizona State Land Department Board has been set at $68.5 million, marking the starting point of the bidding at the same amount. An auction date will soon be disclosed to the public.
Alex Meruelo, the owner of the Coyotes, has examined various sites for the new arena and has chosen a location near Scottsdale. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman mentioned that the journey to find a permanent home for the team is ongoing and requires patience.
Since 2009, when their previous owner declared bankruptcy, the Coyotes have lacked a stable location. They had a short stint at Gila River Arena, but their agreement with the city of Glendale was cut short in 2015. Consequently, the team has been renewing their lease at Gila River Arena annually and currently plays in Mullett Arena, which is smaller than most NHL arenas.
