The Los Angeles Kings clinched a spot in the playoffs thanks to a thrilling 5-4 win in overtime against the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday evening. The team saw Viktor Arvidsson even the score in the final moments of the third period, while Adrian Kempe delivered the decisive goal just six seconds into the extra session, pushing the Kings to third in the Pacific Division standings.
This victory, along with a defeat for the Vegas Golden Knights, means the Kings have secured their place in the postseason for the third year in a row. They now prepare to go head-to-head against the Edmonton Oilers in the first round for the third consecutive time, finishing the season one point ahead of the Knights with a total of 99 points.
Despite leading by two goals as they entered the final period, the Kings watched the Blackhawks turn the game on its head with three goals within a span of five minutes. Tyler Johnson, Joey Anderson, and Ryan Donato were all on target for the Blackhawks, with Donato's goal handing them a brief lead with more than 13 minutes left on the clock.
Arvidsson's significant contribution came after a season marred by injuries, scoring twice and providing an assist in the critical game. Quinton Byfield, ending a 19-game goalless run, also scored his 20th of the season, with Trevor Moore and Phillip Danault adding to the score sheet with both goals and assists.
On the other side, this defeat added to a streak of losses for the Blackhawks, marking their sixth consecutive dropout and concluding their season with one of the lowest point totals in the league for the second year in a row. Their 52 points was the franchise's smallest haul since the 1955-56 season, with Arvid Soderblom stopping 31 shots in their final game.
