In an exciting match, Auston Matthews managed to outperform Alex Ovechkin, although Ovechkin put up a commendable effort.
Matthews netted his 56th and 57th goals of the season, leading the NHL and edging closer to achieving a season of 70 goals, while also tying his own record for the most points in a game at five. This performance helped the Toronto Maple Leafs clinch their spot in the playoffs.
Despite Ovechkin's 844th and 845th career goals inching him closer to Wayne Gretzky's legendary record, Matthews stole the spotlight with his scoring prowess during the game.
Contributions also came from Connor McMichael for the Washington team, and on the Toronto side, goals were added by Nylander, McCabe, McMann, Bertuzzi, and Tavares. Goalkeepers Joseph Woll and Charlie Lindgren were kept busy, with Woll ultimately securing the victory for the Maple Leafs.
The Capitals were at a disadvantage with T.J. Oshie and Aliaksei Protas sidelined due to injuries, hampering their chances of cementing a playoff spot despite a run of wins.
Looking ahead, the Toronto Maple Leafs are set to host the Oilers on Saturday, and the Capitals will play against the Hurricanes on Friday, which will mark a notable return for Evgeny Kuznetsov to Washington.
