Auston Matthews previously played for Team USA as an 18-year-old on Team North America during the World Cup.
Originally from Scottsdale, Arizona, Matthews is one of six initial players named to the US roster for the upcoming 4 Nations Tournament in Boston and Montreal in February 2025.
He will be accompanied by Matthew Tkachuk, Jack Eichel, Quinn Hughes, Charlie McAvoy, and Adam Fox. Notably, all these players advanced through the US National Team Development Program at some point in their careers.
Winning gold at the U-18 tournament in 2014 with Eichel remains Matthews' most cherished memory from his time in the program.
The strong bonds formed through the program still persist, serving as a motivating factor for Team USA in the tournament. They aim to leverage their familiarity when facing the formidable rosters of Canada, Finland, and Sweden.
Team Canada includes Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, Brad Marchand, and Brayden Point, while Team Sweden features Mika Zibanejad, William Nylander, Filip Forsberg, Victor Hedman, Erik Karlsson, and Gustav Forsling.
Team Finland will consist of Aleksander Barkov, Mikko Rantanen, Sebastian Aho, Juuse Saros, Miro Heiskanen, and Esa Lindell.
Matthews believes that success in such tournaments depends on which team can come together the quickest.
He opted not to discuss recent coaching and player changes within his NHL team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, indicating that those matters were not relevant to the current conversation.
