In Buffalo, New York, Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice announced that captain Aleksander Barkov is set to rejoin the lineup to play against the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night. Barkov returns after being sidelined for eight games due to a lower body injury.
The anticipation surrounding Barkov's comeback is heightened as it precedes the Panthers' trip to his hometown of Tampere, Finland. There, they are scheduled to face the Dallas Stars in the NHL's Global Series on Friday and Saturday.
The two-time Frank J. Selke Trophy winner, recognized as the NHL's top defensive forward, sustained his injury when he collided with the end boards while trying to prevent Tim Stutzle from scoring an empty-net goal during a 3-1 loss at Ottawa on October 10. Barkov resumed skating a week after the injury, with coach Maurice emphasizing that the team was cautious not to rush his return.
Despite Barkov's absence, the defending Stanley Cup champion Panthers managed a 5-2-1 record and currently lead the Atlantic Division with a 6-3-1 record.
