Mathieu Olivier and Daniil Tarasov played pivotal roles in the Columbus Blue Jackets' 6-2 triumph over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday evening. Olivier managed to find the net twice, and Tarasov contributed to the victory by saving 25 shots.
Columbus also saw goals from Justin Danforth, Sean Monahan, James van Riemsdyk, and Kirill Marchenko. On the Toronto side, Matthew Knies and Nicholas Robertson each scored, although the team has now suffered losses in two out of their last three games.
This marked the second time this season that the Blue Jackets scored three goals in the opening period. The Maple Leafs, following a home victory against Tampa Bay on Monday, faced challenges on offense and only recorded six shots in the first period.
A turning point occurred when the Blue Jackets altered their lineup, resulting in a more even distribution of offensive efforts. The newly configured fourth line made an impact, with van Riemsdyk scoring the opening goal, followed by contributions from Danforth and Olivier. Monahan scored again for Columbus in the second period.
Danforth has consistently performed well against Toronto, achieving three goals and four assists over seven career games against the Maple Leafs.
The Maple Leafs are set to play against St. Louis on Thursday, while the Blue Jackets will head to Nashville for their game on Saturday.
