The Boston Bruins were vocally opposed to the decision made by the game officials to validate a goal by Sam Bennett from the Florida Panthers during their fourth game encounter, arguing that there was goalie interference involved.
The controversial goal by Bennett balanced the score 2-2 in the last period and led to an immediate challenge by the Bruins. The challenge was sparked by footage that appeared to show Bennett pushing Charlie Coyle into Jeremy Swayman, clearing the way for a goal.
After a review of the incident, the conclusion was that the goal did not result from goalie interference, as per the officials and affirmed by the NHL Situation Room’s analysis. As a result of challenging the call unsuccessfully, the Bruins were penalized for delaying the game.
The decision did not sit well with Coyle and Swayman, who argued that the push from Bennett affected Swayman's ability to interact with the puck effectively.
Jim Montgomery, the Bruins' coach, and Swayman both displayed their disagreement with the officials' call, emphasizing the team's reasoning behind the challenge and their expectation for it to be overturned.
On the other hand, the perspective from the Panthers' camp was different. Coach Paul Maurice and Bennett himself downplayed the severity of the contact between Coyle and Bennett, with Bennett expressing no shock that the goal was allowed.
Though the Panthers advanced to a 3-1 lead in the series following this game, the Bruins are looking forward to returning the series to Boston for Game 5, with their confidence intact.
