Philadelphia Flyers News & Updates

Supporters of the Flyers will need to be patient for a bit longer as their team has not qualified for the playoff games in the past four years.

The team showed promise early on but was unable to maintain their performance towards the end of the season, eliminating their chances for playoff contention. Both Coach John Tortorella and General Manager Danny Briere have recognized that there are areas where the team needs to improve.

For Briere, the focus is not immediately on playoff qualification but rather on nurturing the young talent within the team and addressing various deficiencies.

Tortorella is of the view that the team's roster needs more talent and it's his responsibility to steer the team through its rebuilding phase.

He has decided to stay on as the coach, receiving commendations from Briere for leading the Flyers to a more competitive season than initially anticipated, considering they were expected to be among the lowest performers in the NHL.

The season was fraught with hurdles, including injuries to key player Carter Hart and the contentious benching of team captain Sean Couturier by Tortorella, a move that Tortorella stood by even as he critiqued the player's agent for public comments.

Tortorella's strategies and decisions, despite being controversial at times, have earned him the backing of both the team and the management. Looking ahead, the Flyers possess the 12th pick in the draft, which could be used to strengthen the team further, with a focus on securing short-term contracts for experienced players.

Briere is advocating for a step-by-step approach to building a solid team foundation before making moves to contend aggressively for the Stanley Cup.
