Boston Bruins News & Updates

The Boston Bruins have finalized an eight-year, $66 million deal with their main goaltender, Jeremy Swayman, successfully concluding a contract disagreement that posed a threat to the start of the regular season.

As a restricted free agent, Swayman had been absent from the training camp and was facing a December 1 deadline to either sign or miss the entire season. In the previous year, Swayman and teammate Linus Ullmark shared responsibilities in goal, leading the Bruins through a record-breaking season.

This new contract positions Swayman among the league's top-paid goalies, with an average annual salary of $8.25 million.

Swayman expressed his enthusiasm for rejoining the team and conveyed gratitude towards fans for their support during the negotiation stage through a message on social media.

The agreement prevents any potential holdout that could have negatively impacted the Bruins' season, who have consistently performed well with multiple 100-point seasons yet faced challenges in the playoffs.

Last season, Swayman and Ullmark rotated, with Swayman starting in 43 games and managing to secure the top spot during the playoffs. However, the Bruins were ultimately defeated by the eventual Stanley Cup winners in the second round.

General manager Don Sweeney made securing Swayman a priority but traded Ullmark before finalizing the new contract, providing Swayman with increased leverage in discussions.

With Swayman now signed, the Bruins have Joonas Korpisalo and Brandon Bussi also on their roster. Coach Jim Montgomery had considered Swayman's absence similar to having an injured player, preparing for alternative scenarios.

Despite Swayman's return, Korpisalo is anticipated to start in the season opener against the Panthers as initially planned.
