The comeback of Auston Matthews was not enough to propel Toronto forward as they were knocked out in Game 7 by Boston, following a narrow 2-1 loss in overtime.
Having sat out three previous matches due to health and injury woes, Matthews made a concerted effort to turn the tide with team-mate William Nylander, who similarly faced challenges with his health during the series.
Yet, Toronto's attacking efforts were insufficient, managing a mere 12 goals over the series of seven matches.
In a crucial moment, David Pastrnak of the Bruins sealed their victory with an overtime goal, setting up Boston for a second-round matchup against Florida.
Toronto’s coach, Sheldon Keefe, stood behind his leading players including Matthews, Nylander, and Mitch Marner, in spite of their scant goal tally.
Keefe is optimistic about the team's development and suggests they might have succeeded in advancing had they not undermined their own efforts in the preceding games.
