The Boston Bruins have sent Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, thereby dissolving their top goaltending duo in the NHL.
The 30-year-old Ullmark was exchanged for Mark Kastelic, Joonas Korpisalo, and a 2024 first-round draft pick. Ottawa is set to retain 25% of Korpisalo's salary.
Ullmark's contract, valid for one year, carries a salary cap hit of $5 million along with a partial no-trade clause.
Previously, the partnership between Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman formed the backbone of the Bruins' strong defense, earning them the Jennings Trophy in the 2022-23 season. Additionally, Ullmark was recognized with the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goaltender.
Despite this, Swayman secured more playing time during the 2023-24 regular season and took on the majority of postseason starts. This shift, along with financial factors, prompted the Bruins to trade Ullmark.
Boston's general manager, Don Sweeney, expressed his appreciation for Ullmark's efforts with the team.
Korpisalo, who is also 30, has four years remaining on his five-year contract. His salary cap hit for the Bruins will be $3 million due to salary retention. He is set to form a new goalie tandem with Anton Forsberg.
Kastelic, 25, accumulated 10 points across 63 games for the Senators this season and will enter his fourth NHL season.
