The Buffalo Sabres have dismissed head coach Don Granato from his position, marking him as the seventh coach to be let go amid their unprecedented 13-year playoff absence.
Since taking the helm in the pandemic-shortened 2021 season, Granato ended his tenure with a 122-125-27 ledger for Buffalo. Despite securing a contract extension, his performance fell short of fostering a consistently competitive team.
This past season saw the Sabres with a standing of 39-37-6, hindered by sluggish beginnings and injuries among crucial team members. A notable shift towards defensive strategies under Granato's guidance was met with skepticism.
Even with Granato's role in the progression of talents such as Rasmus Dahlin and Tage Thompson, the squad's failure to advance their standings and secure a playoff spot ultimately led to his exit.
The team also parted ways with assistant coach Jason Christie and video coordinator Matt Smith. The quest for a new head coach is underway for the Sabres, eyeing prospects like Craig Berube, Seth Appert, and Michael Peca.
