Washington Capitals News & Updates

The Washington Capitals have added forward Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames to boost their scoring depth and support star player Alex Ovechkin.

In exchange, the Flames received a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL draft, which was originally Colorado Avalanche's and was traded to Washington in a deal for Lars Eller.

The 28-year-old Mangiapane, now entering his eighth NHL season, tallied 40 points, consisting of 14 goals and 26 assists, in 75 games last season for Calgary. Over his NHL career, he has accumulated 215 points, comprising 109 goals and 106 assists, across 417 games.

With the acquisitions of both Mangiapane and Pierre Luc-Dubois from the Los Angeles Kings, the Capitals have significantly improved their offense, which ranked 28th in the league last season with an average of 2.63 goals per game.

These new additions are particularly vital as the team deals with injuries to Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie, whose returns are uncertain. Enhanced scoring capability will also aid Ovechkin, who is just 42 goals shy of surpassing Wayne Gretzky's NHL record for most career goals.
