In an astonishing turn of events, the Carolina Hurricanes overcame the New York Islanders on Monday, managing to score both the equalizer and the decisive goals within a mere nine seconds in the third period, propelling them to a 2-0 advantage in the first round of the Eastern Conference series.
With their goalie pulled for an extra attacker, Sebastian Aho leveled the score at 3-3 for the Hurricanes with only 2:15 left on the clock in the third period, wiping out the Islanders' initial 3-0 lead. Jordan Martinook then quickly put Carolina in front, snatching the puck from Noah Dobson and finding the back of the net only nine seconds later.
This quick succession of goals set a new NHL record for the fastest consecutive game-tying and game-winning goals scored in the third period of a postseason match.
Other contributing scorers for Carolina were Teuvo Teravainen, Seth Jarvis, and Jake Guentzel. From the Islanders' camp, Anders Lee expressed the disappointment of the loss, stating it was a tough one to stomach.
The Hurricanes showed their dominance throughout the game, notably outshooting the Islanders with a total of 110 to 28 attempts, and having a staggering 17 to 1 shot advantage in the tumultuous third period. Islanders' coach Patrick Roy acknowledged the need for improvement from his team following the game.
The series is set to continue in Long Island for Game 3 on Thursday. In concerning news for the Hurricanes, coach Rod Brind'Amour reported that defenseman Brett Pesce is dealing with a lower-body injury and will undergo further assessment.
