Sam Montembeault was outstanding in Montreal, stopping 48 shots and helping the Canadiens secure a 1-0 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Cole Caufield scored the only goal of the game during the first period, finishing a play with Juraj Slafkovsky and Kirby Dach.
This performance marked Montembeault's seventh career shutout in the NHL, making him the seventh goalie in the Canadiens' history to achieve this feat in a season opener. For Toronto, Anthony Stolarz took the net, making 26 saves, as Joseph Woll was sidelined due to injury.
The Maple Leafs faced difficulties with penalties, tallying five minor infractions in the first two periods alone, and hitting the post three times in the second period.
One of the game's crucial moments saw Montembeault making a glove save on a shot by Auston Matthews. Caufield's goal also highlighted his streak of scoring in the season opener against the Maple Leafs for the third consecutive year. With this goal, Caufield reached 150 career points in just 206 games, achieving this milestone faster than any Canadien since Saku Koivu in the 1997-98 season.
Looking ahead, the Canadiens are set to visit Boston on Thursday night, while the Maple Leafs will play against the New Jersey team.
