Chris Kreider found the net twice and Igor Shesterkin made 34 saves as the New York Rangers secured a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. Contributions from Alexis Lafreniere, Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Reilly Smith helped the Rangers enhance their season record to 4-0-1.
Auston Matthews tallied the only goal for Toronto, with Anthony Stolarz stopping 25 shots. Shesterkin delivered crucial saves throughout the matchup, including key stops against John Tavares and William Nylander.
The Maple Leafs were unsuccessful in all three of their power-play opportunities, bringing their season tally to just 2-for-16. In contrast, the Rangers have achieved victories in their initial three road games this season, marking only the third time in franchise history they’ve accomplished this feat.
A pivotal moment arose when Max Domi opted not to shoot during a 3-on-1, which led to Kreider scoring during a delayed penalty soon after. Lafreniere has managed to record at least one point in each of the Rangers’ first five games, equaling the second-longest season-opening point streak for a Ranger under 23 years old.
Looking ahead, the Maple Leafs will play host to Tampa Bay on Monday, while the Rangers are set to visit Montreal on Tuesday.
