Miles Wood delivered a decisive backhander in overtime, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-3 win over the Dallas Stars in the first game of their Western Conference playoff, despite trailing by three goals after the first period.
Cale Makar made significant contributions with a goal and two assists, alongside Valerie Nichushkin who also scored and assisted once. The equalizer came early in the third period from Nathan MacKinnon, while goaltender Alexander Georgiev stopped 19 shots.
Early in the match, the Stars built a 3-0 advantage thanks to goals by Jamie Benn, Ryan Sutter, and Wyatt Johnston. Despite making 22 saves, Dallas' goalie Jake Oettinger couldn't help his team maintain its defense, breaking their streak of limiting opponents to two goals or fewer over six games.
Coming off a taxing seven-game series against Vegas, the Avalanche shifted momentum in their favor with two second-period power-play goals by Nichushkin and Makar, reducing the deficit to 3-2. Wood's game-winning goal in overtime is recorded as the third instance in the team's playoff history of overturning a three-goal deficit to win.
The teams are scheduled to face off again in Game 2 on Thursday night.
