On Sunday night, the Colorado Avalanche secured a 5-4 win over the Ottawa Senators in Denver, achieving their fifth straight victory.
In the third period, Logan O'Connor and Ross Colton each scored in a span of 1 minute and 32 seconds. The Avalanche also celebrated Nikolai Kovalenko's inaugural NHL goal and Josh Manson's first of the season. Despite a strong comeback attempt from Ottawa, Colorado claimed their second home win.
The Senators overcame a 2-0 start by scoring through Brady Tkachuk and Nick Cousins. However, goals from O'Connor and Colton put Colorado back up by two, only for Claude Giroux to respond quickly. Nathan MacKinnon added an empty-net goal to seal the win, although Giroux closed the gap with his second goal in the closing moments.
Although they show offensive potential, the Senators continue to struggle with clinching wins. Colorado's Justus Annunen appears to have taken over as the main goaltender from Alexandar Georgiev, having led the team to the last four wins.
A pivotal moment came in the second period when Linus Ullmark substituted for Ottawa's Anton Forsberg due to an equipment issue. Forsberg returned twice before being replaced again.
MacKinnon has consistently contributed a point in all nine games this season, replicating a personal milestone achieved in the 2017-18 season.
Looking ahead, the Senators are set to play against St. Louis on Tuesday night, while the Avalanche are scheduled to host Chicago on Monday night.
