Columbus Blue Jackets News & Updates

The Columbus Blue Jackets secured free-agent center Sean Monahan with a five-year contract worth $27.5 million on Monday.

This contract gives the 29-year-old Monahan an annual salary of $5.5 million. He was previously with the Winnipeg Jets last season.

Monahan flourished under coach Rick Bowness on the offensively potent Jets team, where he managed to score 13 goals and collect 24 points in just 34 games, playing across various lines.

Overall, Monahan accumulated 26 goals and 59 points last season while playing for both the Jets and the Montreal Canadiens. This offseason presented an ideal moment for Monahan to land his most lucrative contract yet, having earned just $2 million the prior season.

Columbus general manager Don Waddell praised Monahan, stating that he is an exceptional player whose addition strengthens the team by bringing experience, leadership, and versatility. Waddell highlighted Monahan's scoring ability, playmaking skills, proficiency in faceoffs, and contributions on both the power play and penalty kill. The team is excited to welcome him to the Blue Jackets.
