Connor McDavid, the lead forward for the Edmonton Oilers, will be out of action for a span of two to three weeks following an ankle injury incurred during Monday's 6-1 defeat against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
In his opening shift of the match, McDavid was brought down by defenseman Zach Werenski and experienced an awkward crash into the boards. Although he was able to leave the ice on his own, he was later declared unfit to continue playing in the game.
Widely regarded as the best player in the world, McDavid wrapped up the previous season with 132 points, steering the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy. Over his ten years in the NHL, he has accumulated 992 points in 655 games, maintaining a remarkable career average of 1.51 points per game.
With Edmonton off to a sluggish start, registering 4 wins, 5 losses, and 1 overtime loss in their initial 10 games, McDavid's absence as the captain means that other players on the team will need to rise to the occasion and compensate for his absence.
