Buffalo Sabres News & Updates

In the preliminary round of the ice hockey world championship, Dylan Cozens played a pivotal role in Canada's thrilling 4-3 win over Czechia, guaranteeing an overtime triumph. Representing the Buffalo Sabres, the center netted his second goal in the concluding minutes, marking Canada's seventh consecutive victory.

While Canadian team captain Pierre-Luc Dubois served time in the penalty box, Cozens found the back of the net, leading the tournament with his eighth goal.

With this win, Canada clinched first place in Group A, gathering 19 points and securing their matchup against Slovakia in the quarterfinals.

On the other hand, Czechia, amassing 16 points, awaits their quarterfinals opponent, which will be either Switzerland or Finland pending the result of their last preliminary round match.

The match saw Czechia mount a spirited comeback from a 3-1 disadvantage in the game's dying minutes, thanks to efforts from Ondrej Palat and Roman Cervenka, making up for the initial two scoreless periods.

The score was initially opened by Cozens in the third period, followed by Dominik Kubalik's equalizer, only for Dawson Mercer and Brandon Hagel to extend Canada's lead to 3-1, setting the stage for Czechia's late rally.

In Group B, the United States secured the second spot by defeating Latvia 6-3, with Cole Caufield making a significant contribution of two goals and two assists.

Sweden emerged as the leader of Group B and is slated to face Finland in their upcoming match.

A notable achievement was made by Britain, which celebrated its first victory by defeating Austria 4-2. Austria's loss meant missing the chance to progress to the playoff round, a spot that was secured by Finland instead.
