Pittsburgh Penguins News & Updates

Sidney Crosby has ascended to become the NHL's seventh all-time leading scorer, boasting 583 career goals, a milestone he shares with the legendary Wayne Gretzky. In a striking victory, the Pittsburgh Penguins triumphed over the Detroit Red Wings with a score of 6-3, propelled by notable performances from Crosby, Lars Eller, Reilly Smith, and Valtteri Puustinen.

The victory, however, leaves the Penguins' postseason aspirations hanging by a thread, especially after the departure of Jake Guentzel. Alex Nedeljkovic, a former Red Wings goaltender, contributed to the win by stopping 25 shots for Pittsburgh.

For Detroit, Lucas Raymond netted a pair of goals and Christian Fischer also found the back of the net, contributing to the team's fourth defeat in their last nine outings. The Red Wings' goaltender, Alex Lyon, was challenged with 32 shots throughout the game.

As things stand, Pittsburgh is within reach of claiming the Eastern Conference's second wild card spot, hoping to extend their playoff appearance streak which spans from 2007 to 2022.

The game unfolded with Reilly Smith's opening goal, followed by Crosby's contribution towards the end of the first period. Shortly after, Puustinen also scored, furthering Pittsburgh's lead. The second period saw Michael Bunting extending the lead for Pittsburgh, with Christian Fischer putting Detroit on the scoreboard. A power-play goal from Eller towards the end of the second period solidified Pittsburgh's three-goal lead.

Looking Ahead:

The Red Wings will be hosting the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday.

The Penguins are set to embark on a three-game road journey, starting with a match against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.
