Miro Heiskanen netted two of Dallas' six goals in the first period, leading to a dominant 7-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Monday night. Mason Marchment contributed with one goal and four assists for Dallas, which had been struggling in recent matches.
This six-goal first period for the Stars was only the second time in franchise history such a feat was achieved, and the first instance since 1971. Other players who found the net in the impressive opening were Marchment, Matt Duchene, Tyler Seguin, Logan Stankoven, and Wyatt Johnston.
Dallas' goaltender, Jake Oettinger, made 20 saves, while Brendan Smith provided two assists during his milestone 700th NHL game. Anthony Beauvillier scored the only goal for Pittsburgh.
The defeat marked the Penguins' third loss in their last four games and their ninth in twelve outings. Despite putting on a solid display against Washington, they faltered defensively against Dallas, conceding six goals in the opening period of a home game for the first time.
In bouncing back from a 4-1 loss on Saturday, Marchment tied a franchise record by notching four points in a single period. The Stars are set to play against Boston on Thursday, while the Penguins will welcome Detroit on Wednesday.
