In an exciting game, Damon Severson scored the opening goal in the third period, benefiting from an outstanding 28-save performance by Elvis Merzlikins. The Columbus Blue Jackets managed a 2-0 win over the New York Islanders, achieving their first back-to-back victories of the season.
Although both goalies made excellent saves in the earlier periods, Severson's shot was redirected off Ryan Pulock's skate and found the net. Justin Danforth added another goal with an empty net after Semyon Varlamov was replaced by an extra player.
The Islanders had a rough start in the first period but showed improvement in the second, while Merzlikins remained unbeatable. Despite missing several opportunities, the Blue Jackets capitalized on a lucky break to clinch the win, following a high-scoring streak in their past games.
A significant play occurred when Severson's goal was nullified due to interference by James van Riemsdyk. Merzlikins achieved his 11th career shutout, marking his second consecutive game with a shutout.
Both teams are preparing for their next challenges: the Islanders head to Buffalo, and the Blue Jackets will take on Winnipeg at home on Friday.
