In Prague, Boston Bruins star forward David Pastrnak played a pivotal role as Czechia defeated Switzerland 2-0, clinching the ice hockey world championship on Sunday.
Just days after the Bruins ended their season, Pastrnak scored for his home country. With 10:47 remaining in the final period, his goal electrified the packed Prague Arena.
Positioned in his usual spot in the left circle, Pastrnak received a precise pass from defenseman Tomas Kundratek at the blue line and struck a one-timer past goaltender Leonardo Genoni.
After the medal ceremony, an elated Pastrnak commented during his on-ice interview, expressing how special it was to win on home soil. He thanked the fans for their unwavering support, emphasizing the joy in delivering a medal-winning performance.
This was Pastrnak's first goal of the tournament. David Kampf later added an empty-net goal with just 19 seconds left, extending Czechia's lead.
Bruins teammate Pavel Zacha shared his thoughts before the final, noting the team's admirable performance. He highlighted the team's strong work ethic and collective determination as key factors in their deep run.
After their Game 6 loss to the Florida Panthers in Boston on May 17, Zacha and Pastrnak quickly shifted focus to representing their country, a decision that paid off handsomely.
Pastrnak expressed how special it was to play in a home tournament, something he hadn't experienced before. He affirmed his commitment to representing his national team whenever possible.
This victory marks Czechia's seventh title since its formation in 1993, and its first championship since 2010.
