David Rittich has been named the starting goalie for the Los Angeles Kings in their fourth game against the Edmonton Oilers during the initial round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
He is stepping in for Cam Talbot, who has not performed well, giving up 13 goals due to a high goals-against average and a low save percentage throughout the series.
The team's interim coach, Jim Hiller, revealed this lineup change on Saturday following a discussion with both goalkeepers.
Over the course of 24 regular season appearances, Rittich demonstrated solid performance metrics, anchoring the team's defense with an impressive goals-against average, save percentage, and securing three shutouts, one of which was against the Oilers.
His last game before this announcement was a victorious effort against Anaheim on April 13, where he successfully blocked 28 shots.
Hiller has commended Rittich's ability to maintain a high level of play even after not being active for some time. Although this marks only his second playoff start, with his first having ended early due to an allowance of five goals within the first 15 minutes, hopes are high for his performance in the upcoming game.
