Washington Capitals News & Updates

The Washington Capitals and Wizards are set to stay in the District of Columbia for many years to come following the finalization of a $515 million arena project. This agreement assures their presence in the city until 2050.

This pact, which was formalized by Mayor Muriel Bowser and team owner Ted Leonsis, not only secures the teams' future in Washington, D.C. but also plans for the expansion of the arena into the Gallery Place, aiming to transform it into a vibrant entertainment district. Furthermore, it includes improvements to safety measures and transportation facilities.

The resolution was reached shortly after officials in Alexandria, Virginia, announced the discontinuation of their discussions regarding a potential new arena. Despite Virginia's larger offer in terms of land, Leonsis found the 200,000 square feet of expansion space in the District to be adequate.

The termination of discussions with Virginia led to expressed disappointment from Alexandria, attributing the outcome to a lack of support from the state's legislature. Virginia's Governor, Glenn Youngkin, also shared his dismay, pointing out the missed economic opportunities the project could have delivered to the state.

The proposed project in Virginia had faced criticisms from a variety of groups including labor unions, residents of Alexandria, and officials from D.C., with the financing model of the project, through moral obligation bonds, attracting particular scrutinity.

Leonsis recently highlighted the robust attendance at the Capital One Arena, forecasting an attendance exceeding 400,000 fans for the month of March. Despite this, a section of Capitals supporters voiced their disapproval of him during a recent event celebrating T.J. Oshie.
