In a thrilling overtime, Dylan Larkin's goal on a power play clinched a 5-4 win for the Detroit Red Wings over the Toronto Maple Leafs, notwithstanding a historic 69th season goal from Auston Matthews.
The Red Wings established a commanding 4-1 lead by the end of the first period, thanks to contributions from Alex DeBrincat, Simon Edvinsson, and David Perron, with DeBrincat netting another during a power play in the second period.
The Maple Leafs mounted a comeback in the second period with three goals, among them Matthews' goal that equaled Mario Lemieux's record from the 1995-96 season. John Tavares and Nick Robertson also added to Toronto's tally.
Despite Matthews' missed opportunity for a 70th goal in the third period, Larkin seized the moment during overtime following a high-sticking penalty against Max Domi, handing the win to Detroit.
This victory keeps Detroit in the chase for a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, while Toronto secures its position as the third seed in the Atlantic Division.
Detroit is set to host Montreal on Monday, and Toronto will head to Florida for a two-game series starting Tuesday.
