Vladimir Tarasenko, a two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Florida Panthers, has agreed to a two-year deal offering an annual salary of $4.75 million with the Detroit Red Wings.
This acquisition is a significant move for the Red Wings, who have been particularly active this offseason by re-signing Patrick Kane and bringing in Christian Fischer, Tyler Motte, Jack Campbell, Erik Gustafsson, and Cam Talbot.
Despite these additions, the Red Wings also parted ways with some key players by trading Jake Walman, Shayne Gostisbehere, and David Perron.
The wave of transactions left the Red Wings with over $24 million in projected salary cap space, facilitating the signing of Tarasenko.
Tarasenko, who has previously played for the Blues, Rangers, and Senators, now joins a Red Wings squad intent on securing a playoff spot.
The Red Wings have missed the playoffs since the 2015-16 season but narrowly missed out this year, finishing on par with the Washington Capitals only to lose the final wild-card spot due to a tiebreaker.
With Tarasenko in their roster, the Red Wings now feature a robust forward lineup that includes J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp, Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, and Kane.
Soon after signing Tarasenko, the Red Wings traded Robby Fabbri and a conditional fourth-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks for Gage Alexander, freeing up $4 million in cap space.
