Luke Hughes and Brett Pesce are making their season appearances for the New Jersey Devils in Detroit on Thursday after recovering from injuries.
At 21 years old, Hughes dealt with a shoulder injury sustained during his offseason training, whereas 29-year-old Pesce faced a leg fracture during the playoffs last year.
Even with a 5-3-1 record without these defensemen, the Devils have conceded 14 goals in their last two games.
In the previous season, Hughes scored nine goals and provided 38 assists over 82 games, which led to his nomination as a Calder Trophy finalist for the league's best rookie.
Before signing with the Devils as a free agent in the offseason, Pesce played 627 games with the Carolina Hurricanes.
