The New Jersey Devils have brought back Tomas Tatar, a forward, on a one-year contract. Tatar spent time with the Devils from 2021 to 2023 before entering free agency.
This new deal is worth $1.8 million. Now 33, Tatar is anticipated to fill a secondary or tertiary role on the team. Last season, he played for both the Colorado Avalanche and the Seattle Kraken.
During his earlier time with the Devils, Tatar was pivotal in leading the team to the Stanley Cup playoffs, breaking a five-year absence. He recorded 35 goals and accumulated 78 points over 158 games in those two seasons. Throughout his career, Tatar has tallied 15 or more goals in nine NHL seasons, hitting the 20-goal milestone seven times.
After entering free agency last summer, Tatar signed with Colorado but struggled to find his form, scoring only one goal in 27 games with an average ice time of 11:16 minutes. His performance improved with the Seattle Kraken, where he scored eight goals in 43 games and increased his average ice time to 13:11 minutes.
Throughout most of his career, Tatar has averaged over 15 minutes of play per game, reaching a peak of 25 goals in the 2016-17 season with the Detroit Red Wings. He has also been part of two teams that made it to the Stanley Cup Finals: the 2018 Vegas Golden Knights and the 2021 Montreal Canadiens.
