Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson will be sidelined for three to six weeks following an appendectomy. The procedure was necessary after Gibson participated in training camp, though he did not play in the preseason games.
Gibson's absence could affect the Ducks' regular-season opener against the San Jose Sharks on October 12. If Gibson's recovery period extends, Lukas Dostal may take his place as the starting goaltender.
Last season, Dostal outperformed Gibson by recording a higher save percentage and better goals-against average, despite the Ducks' defensive challenges. These struggles have sparked trade rumors concerning Gibson, whose declining performance and contract situation could complicate potential trades.
Anaheim will depend on Dostal, who made his debut in 2022 and had an impressive season last year. He also shone for Czechia at the 2024 IIHF World Championships, securing a gold medal and being named top goaltender.
