Despite being the NHL playoffs' leading scorer, Connor McDavid has yet to score a goal for the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Final, and their usually potent power play has also failed to produce.
The Florida Panthers have taken a 2-0 series lead, thanks to their strong defense. McDavid remains confident, however, that the Oilers can overcome this in the pivotal Game 3 on Thursday.
Edmonton's offensive strategy hinges on their effective power play, which has been a postseason strength. Yet, the Panthers' penalty kill stepped up its game, especially in Game 2, limiting Edmonton's scoring opportunities.
The Oilers have been unsuccessful on all 12 of their power play attempts over four games against the Panthers this season.
McDavid noted that the Panthers frequently challenge the puck and predict Edmonton's next moves. He emphasized the need for a more instinctive, less structured approach, describing it as playing "elite" road hockey.
Throughout the series, the Oilers have managed to score just one goal, while the Panthers have leaned on their goalie, Sergei Bobrovsky, and a tightened defense to limit Edmonton's shots.
McDavid acknowledged the Panthers' aggressive play but pointed out that their errors create scoring opportunities that must be capitalized on.
Changes in the lineup are anticipated for Game 3. Coach Kris Knoblauch mentioned that veteran forward Corey Perry is likely to return, while Evander Kane, who is dealing with an injury, might sit out.
Darnell Nurse, who was injured in Game 2, is expected to play.
Additionally, the NHL has decided not to suspend Leon Draisaitl for his hit on Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov, who participated in practice.
