Leon Draisaitl led the charge with two goals, propelling the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 win against the Los Angeles Kings in the fifth game. This victory marked the Oilers' advancement by eliminating the Kings in their first-round series of the NHL playoffs for the third year in a row.
Contributions also came from Zach Hyman and Evander Kane, who both scored for Edmonton. Three assists were credited to Evan Bouchard, while both Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins provided two assists each. Oilers' goalie Stuart Skinner safeguarded the net, making 18 saves.
On the Kings' side, goals were scored by Adrian Kempe, Alex Laferriere, and Blake Lizotte. Goalie David Rittich made 22 saves for Los Angeles.
With this win, the Oilers are set to compete in the second round against whoever emerges victorious between the Vancouver Canucks and the Nashville Predators.
During the second period, the Oilers surged ahead by scoring three goals consecutively, achieving a 4-2 lead. A power-play goal by Draisaitl equalized the game at 7:44, followed by another goal involving McDavid and Draisaitl shortly after. Hyman finalized the score to 4-2 right after a penalty against the Kings had ended.
In the game's concluding minutes, the Kings sought to level the score. However, a penalty against Phillip Danault for hooking Draisaitl with just 19.7 seconds remaining resulted in a power play for Edmonton, diminishing Los Angeles' chances for a comeback.
This progression marks the Oilers' first advancement past the initial round in three successive years since the early '90s. Last year, they were defeated by the Vegas Golden Knights in the second round.
