Tampa Bay Lightning News & Updates

Jon Cooper, the coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, observed a video tribute celebrating Steven Stamkos's 16-year journey with the team. Stamkos, who now plays for the Nashville Predators, made his return to Tampa wearing a different jersey.

Stamkos holds the record for the most games, goals, and points in the history of the Lightning. He played a significant role in promoting the sport in Tampa and was deeply involved in the community. Despite this, he and the Lightning went separate ways after the previous season when they couldn't reach an agreement on a new contract.

The following Monday marked Stamkos's first opportunity to reconnect with Lightning supporters since his move to Nashville. Fans expressed their excitement during the warm-ups, holding signs to support him, though there were a few who criticized the Tampa Bay management for not securing a contract with him.

Stamkos described it as a surreal experience to face longtime friends as opponents on the ice. Nonetheless, he found a sense of comfort being back at Amalie Arena.

Approximately seven minutes into the match, the scoreboard displayed a two-minute montage highlighting Stamkos's time with the Lightning, prompting fans to stand up and chant his name.

During the second period, Stamkos contributed to the Predators' presence on the scoreboard and helped set up the goal that tied the game shortly after. The Tampa crowd responded with enthusiastic cheers when his name was mentioned.

Tampa Bay claimed victory through an overtime goal by Nick Paul. Stamkos expressed that the evening was filled with emotions, but emphasized his focus on aiding his team to victory.

The event offered fans a moment to demonstrate their gratitude towards Stamkos. However, he acknowledged that he remains attached to his history in Tampa and finds it challenging to completely move on from his time with the Lightning.
