The Blue Jackets opened their first home game since Johnny Gaudreau's untimely passing with a heartfelt tribute, featuring a video montage and a moment of silence to honor his number 13.
The tribute set the stage for the Blue Jackets' 3-0 preseason win against the St. Louis Blues. Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, tragically lost their lives in August due to a suspected drunk driver while they were cycling.
To honor the Gaudreau brothers, the team has added helmet stickers bearing "Gaudreau" and dove images, along with their jersey numbers. Columbus forward Sean Kuraly shared the deep effect Gaudreau's absence has had on the team.
Beginning with the regular season opener, the players will wear a commemorative patch with Gaudreau's number. The traditional home opener activities have been moved to October 17 to include a tribute to the Gaudreau brothers.
Despite the tremendous loss, the Blue Jackets are committed to advancing with a new leadership team, determined to honor their fallen teammate.
Gaudreau’s jersey remains prominently displayed in his locker, symbolizing the strong bonds within the team. This marks the second recent training camp affected by a player's passing, following Matiss Kivlenieks' tragic death in 2021.
Columbus clinched the victory with goals from Denton Mateychuk, Kirill Marchenko, and an empty-net goal by Kent Johnson.
