Three distinguished defensemen, Quinn Hughes, Roman Josi, and Cale Makar, are in the running for this year's Norris Trophy. This accolade is presented each year to the defenseman who exhibits superior all-around capability at their position during the season.
Hughes stands out as a nominee for the first time, topping the NHL defensemen chart with 75 assists, 92 points, and 17 goals. His efforts were pivotal in leading the Vancouver Canucks into the playoffs, thanks to their impressive offensive output (ranked sixth in goals per game) and stringent defensive efforts (ranked as having the sixth-lowest goals against).
Josi, a Norris Trophy recipient in 2019, overcame an initial slow start to reclaim his top-tier status. He finished the season leading all defensemen in goals (23) and securing the third position in points (85). His performance was crucial in driving the Nashville Predators to a playoffs berth, with the team achieving the 14th spot in defense rankings.
Makar, who currently holds the Norris Trophy, demonstrated his remarkable abilities by scoring 21 goals and accumulating 90 points across 77 games. Even with injuries setting him back, he maintained a steady output for the Colorado Avalanche. Particularly impactful on the power play, Makar earned 38 points - the most among defensemen, and added four short-handed points, underscoring his defensive skills.
