Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice finally received his long-awaited Stanley Cup championship ring after 30 years. However, even after receiving the box containing the ring, he found himself waiting an additional 30 minutes to see the prize.
The Panthers held a private ceremony to distribute dozens of rings, celebrating their victory with staff, players, and medical personnel. Owners Vincent and Teresa Viola wanted everyone to open their boxes at the same time.
The rings boasted 617 gemstones, amounting to 15.6 carats, and included a rat design carved inside the band, paying homage to the fans' tradition of throwing plastic rats on the ice after wins. The boxes themselves were notable, featuring a video screen showcasing highlights from the championship journey.
During the event, the Violas personally expressed their gratitude to each player, suggesting to captain Aleksander Barkov the potential for another championship run next year. They also acknowledged players such as Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Reinhart, and Carter Verhaeghe, hoping to keep them on the team.
The celebration, which started with Florida's victory over Edmonton on June 24, will wrap up with the raising of the championship banner at the regular-season opening game against the Boston Bruins.
Initially intended as a public gathering, the ceremony was held privately due to Hurricane Milton. Sam Bennett highlighted the ring's importance and the symbolism it holds for the beginning of the upcoming season.
Vincent Viola, who initially planned to attend casually, was convinced by his wife to buy a new suit for the occasion. Teresa Viola commended her husband's ambition and dedication in achieving a Stanley Cup victory for South Florida.
