Florida broke records by taking a leadership position early on in a playoff contest against Tampa Bay.
The scoring was initiated by Verhaeghe with a power-play goal, thanks to an assist from Barkov. Tkachuk then expanded their lead by scoring and assisting on a goal. Barkov contributed with two assists of his own, and Reinhart too found the back of the net for Florida. Bobrovsky contributed with 17 stops for the Panthers, marking their initial Game 1 victory at home since 1997.
For Tampa Bay, Hagel and Stamkos managed to score, while Vasilevskiy blocked 25 shots. Even with pulling Vasilevskiy for an additional skater, Tkachuk sealed the deal for Florida with an empty-net goal, pushing them to a 1-0 lead in the series.
The previous season's elimination from the playoffs led to significant changes within the Florida team, instigated by coach Maurice. These strategic adjustments drove the Panthers not only to the Stanley Cup final but also helped them clinch the Atlantic Division title, demonstrating their effectiveness in Game 1.
In the beginning, Tampa Bay found it challenging to penetrate Bobrovsky's defense but tightened their gameplay as the match progressed. The encounter was marked by stringent defense, resulting in a low number of shots for Florida after two periods and for Tampa Bay entering the third, their third-lowest to be precise.
Tkachuk attributed Florida's victory to a collective mindset focused on winning. The second game of the series is scheduled to take place in Sunrise on Tuesday.
