Stephen Peat, a former player for the Washington Capitals in the NHL, died from injuries sustained in an accident. The news was announced by the NHL Alumni Association on Thursday.
Peat, aged 44, was hit by a car as he was walking in Langley, British Columbia, on August 30th. Initially, the police in Langley released information about a pedestrian being struck at that time and place, but they did not identify Peat as the victim.
A Canadian news outlet later confirmed, through Peat's close friend Howie Zaron, that Peat was the individual who had been hit.
During his NHL career, Peat played 130 games for the Capitals across four seasons. He primarily served as an enforcer, recording eight goals, two assists, and 234 penalty minutes.
In December 2005, Peat was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes but never played for them due to injuries. He retired from hockey in 2007.
After retiring, Peat struggled with issues related to concussions, addiction, and homelessness.
