Emil Heineman and Cole Caufield found the back of the net early, propelling the Montreal Canadiens to a 4-1 win against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night.
Alex Newhook increased Montreal's advantage to 3-0 at the start of the third period before Tim Stutzle managed to break Sam Montembeault's pursuit of a second straight shutout. Caufield sealed the outcome by netting his second goal of the evening and fourth for the season.
Mike Matheson had a chance with a penalty shot, but Linus Ullmark successfully blocked it.
The Canadiens outperformed in special team situations, with Heineman scoring during a power play, and Montreal capitalizing on one out of four power-play chances. Ottawa did not score on any of their four opportunities.
A pivotal point occurred in the second period when the Senators outshot the Canadiens 12-3, putting Montembeault, who only faced four shots in the first period, under significant pressure.
Heineman's first NHL goal during the power play also marked Montreal’s third power-play goal in their initial three regular-season contests.
Looking ahead, the Senators will face the Los Angeles Kings at home on Monday, while the Canadiens prepare to host the Pittsburgh Penguins.
