The Devils saw Jack Hughes striking the net twice, one of which was on an empty net, and Timo Meier contributing with both a goal and an assist.
Auston Matthews highlighted his lead in the NHL by scoring his 59th goal for the season for the Maple Leafs, with additional goals from William Nylander and Tyler Bertuzzi. In the net, Joseph Woll managed to stop 19 shots for Toronto.
Even though Toronto fell behind 2-1 in the opening period, despite outshooting the Devils 25-10, the game was leveled early in the second period thanks to a goal from Nylander. Matthews then added to his tally with his 59th goal, only for the Devils to bring the score even again with a goal from Meier.
The Devils took the lead in the second period to 4-3 thanks to Max Willman, and Jack Hughes further solidified this lead with a third-period breakaway goal followed by an additional score into an empty net.
Up next, the Devils are scheduled to play against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday, whereas the Maple Leafs aim to bounce back in their game against the Washington Capitals on Thursday.
