Jack Hughes and Timo Meier each played a pivotal role with a goal and an assist in guiding the New Jersey Devils to a decisive 4-0 victory over the New York Islanders. In this match, Kaapo Kahkonen excelled by achieving his season's first shutout, blocking 37 shots.
Alexander Holtz and Chris Tierney both contributed by scoring for the Devils, with Kahkonen, a recent acquisition from the trade deadline, notching his first victory while with the team.
A significant moment occurred late in the second period when Nico Hischier exited the game after an encounter with Anders Lee, which led to Lee being penalized with a major penalty and a game misconduct. However, Hischier made a comeback at the beginning of the third period.
The loss added to the Islanders' recent struggles, marking their seventh loss in the last eight attempts, pushing them further away from the Eastern Conference's second wild-card slot, currently held by Washington.
The Devils took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play opportunity early in the second period. Meier capitalized on a setup by Hughes 38 seconds into the period after he managed to get behind the Islanders' defense.
Mistakes by the Islanders led to the Devils scoring three times in one period, a situation that has occurred six times in their last seven games. Hughes increased the lead with a wrist shot that got past Sorokin following a mishap involving three Islanders defenders.
Holtz managed to score from a cross-ice pass by Simon Nemec, who had taken the puck from Lee, setting Holtz up perfectly.
Despite a timeout called by Patrick Roy, the Islanders could not overturn their fortune and remained without a win in the latter half of back-to-back games for this season.
