With only 20 minutes left and behind by one, the Carolina Hurricanes staged a comeback in the NHL playoffs' second round Game 5, beating the New York Rangers 4-1 on Monday evening.
Early in the third, Jordan Staal and Evgeny Kuznetsov put the Hurricanes ahead by scoring two goals in a span of three minutes. Additional scoring from Jordan Martinook and Martin Necas in the same period, paired with Frederik Andersen's 20 saves, solidified the team's position.
Head coach Rod Brind'Amour highlighted the team's calm demeanor under the pressure of possible elimination and their conviction in their ability to reverse their fortunes. Jordan Staal shared his coach's view, pointing out the importance of a powerful performance in the final period, which they delivered on.
On the Rangers side, despite Jacob Trouba scoring a short-handed goal and Igor Shesterkin making 24 saves, they couldn't stave off a second straight defeat. Chris Kreider remains optimistic about the team's chances for a comeback in Game 6.
The Hurricanes, despite not scoring on three power plays, leveraged their late-game chances to win, even after conceding a short-handed goal for the series' second occasion.
Staal's backhanded shot early in the third balanced the score, followed by Kuznetsov putting the Hurricanes in the lead with a rebound shot. Martinook then scored off a pass from Necas, who capped the win with an empty-net goal later on.
The Rangers managed to get a short-handed goal from Trouba during a power play in the second period, but the Hurricanes responded with four unanswered goals in the third period, setting the stage for a critical Game 6 on Thursday night.
