In the final year of his contract with the New York Rangers, Igor Shesterkin decided against accepting the team's proposal to make him the NHL's highest-paid goaltender.
According to sources, Shesterkin turned down an eight-year contract worth $88 million, which would have exceeded the $84 million deal once held by Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens.
The 28-year-old All-Star and Vezina Trophy winner from 2021-22 will become an unrestricted free agent after this season if an agreement with the Rangers is not reached.
Shesterkin shared his fondness for the team while acknowledging that his future remains uncertain.
Over five seasons with the Rangers, Shesterkin has recorded a .921 save percentage along with a 2.43 goals-against average.
He is anticipated to start the season opener against the Pittsburgh Penguins, with Jonathan Quick, a three-time Stanley Cup champion, set to back him up.
In the 2021-22 season, the Rangers clinched the regular season Presidents' Trophy but were defeated by the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
